Cultural depictions of lions are known in European, African and Asian countries. The lion has been an important symbol to humans for tens of thousands of years. The earliest graphic representations feature lions as organized hunters with great strength, strategies, and skills.
Other statues of the mythical beasts belong to cities like ancient Dur Sharrukin (current Khorsabad, Iraq). Every important city wanted to have Lamassu protect the gateway to their citadel. At the same time, another winged creature was made to keep watch at the throne room entrance.
The second is more enigmatic and called the Great Temple. The third is the Temple of the Winged Lions, probably built to honor the goddess al-Uzza. The Temple of the Winged Lions is a large sacred complex with an ascending staircase, a grand entrance flanked by columns, and an inner cultic chamber with a raised podium.
